Known Limitations
The strongest trust signal is naming what a project is not for. Skip offline-banner if:
- You are on X11. The banner is a layer-shell (Wayland) surface, full stop.
- You run GNOME or KDE. They ship their own network indicators, and this module is proven on niri; other layer-shell compositors (sway, Hyprland) are expected but untested.
- You want a network monitor. Graphs, history, per-app stats are non-goals — this is one boolean, honestly derived and honestly displayed.
- You need per-app or per-interface diagnosis. The probe answers “is the path up”, not “which application is misbehaving”.
- You cannot accept a second Quickshell instance. The banner deliberately runs its own Quickshell process so it never depends on your bar’s plugin API.
Accepted tradeoffs
Section titled “Accepted tradeoffs”- IPv4-default probe: on a v6-primary uplink with a broken v4 route the
banner shows offline while v6 browsing works. Point
probeHostat a v6 literal on v6-primary hosts (see Configuration). - First render on a monitor-on session: pixel visibility on real monitors
rode the origin deployment; the behavior itself is machine-verified by the
probe-transitionscheck (see How it works).
